Ngoc Lan's real name is Le Thanh Lan, born on December 28, 1956, in Nha Trang. In 1980, Ngoc Lan moved to the United States and settled in Minnesota. Two years later, Ngoc Lan began her singing career in California. She adopted the stage name "Ngoc Lan" because her real name, Thanh Lan, coincided with another famous singer with the same name. With the introduction of singer Duy Quang, she performed at various music cafes and shows.

With her sweet, soulful, and melancholic voice, Ngoc Lan quickly gained popularity among audiences and was invited to record at famous studios, as well as frequently appeared in nightclubs, music lounges, and other venues.
