Như Mai's real name is Đỗ Như Mai, born in 1960. She started singing in 1982, but her scope of activity was limited to parties among friends or community arts performances. However, it was only in the following year that she officially entered the music industry through collaborations with a few nightclubs, and over a year later, she had her first solo music tape titled "Mộng Ban Đầu" (Initial Dream) produced by Trung Nghĩa for Thanh Lan Center.
In 1986, while singing for fun at Lan coffee shop in Southern California, Như Mai was noticed and invited to collaborate by someone from the Dạ Lan Center's board of directors. Also in 1986, Như Mai joined The Magic band after developing a romantic relationship with Quốc Sĩ, which helped her gain more recognition, especially through love songs.
