i think you need to turn it from opengl to vulkan, and gpu rendering, to fix lag, and for the preview you might be able to find a addon!

Depending on the version you use, it doesn’t matter how powerful your computer is. No matter how many you have, blender only ran on 1 of your CPU cores, hence the stupid amount of lag. However this was fixed in the 5.0 blender update - I believe you were using a version prior to this, so I really think it is worth while trying blender again in the future and reevaluating it now that the lag has gone.

To work with a single clip on your timeline, you can put the clip in a group (select it and press Ctrl-G) then press tab to edit that group (called a MetaStrip). The preview window will then only show what the output of that clip is. MetaStrips can contain multiple strips and effects. If you wanted you could also open another instance of blender, work with a single clip in it, then copy and paste it into your full project as well.

8:53 Remember that Blender is open-source, which means that you could make some changes to the software workflow.

Nodes are just a different way to look at the settings that are often in separate windows but with how things connect being visually easier to grasp. In Blender, the node stack is also available as a window with just lists of settings but it is much harder to navigate.
