Trúc Mai started singing in the late 1950s. During this time, she mainly performed at schools and military camps. In June 1959, she entered the world of colorful lights in music cafes and became a professional singer. Her first collaboration was with Văn Cảnh cafe.
Trúc Mai became famous and well-known in the 1960s. People often mention the songs "Hàn Mặc Tử" by composer Trần Thiện Thanh and "Sài Gòn" by composer Y Vân when talking about Trúc Mai's name. These two songs have been closely associated with her name for many decades.
Trúc Mai can sing many different types of music and sings very well. She is known for her successful renditions of popular foreign songs with Vietnamese lyrics, as well as gentle pre-war era songs.
