Canadian Polar Bear Habitat
Description
The Canadian Polar Bear Habitat is a rescue facility for polar bears. It is currently home to four male bears - Ganuk, Inukshuk, Henry, and Eddy. These bears have been orphaned, rescued, or moved from other facilities, and they need human help to survive.
The Habitat provides the most space in the world for polar bears in human care - twenty-four acres of natural subarctic and boreal terrain, including a 10-acre spring-fed lake with naturally forming winter ice.
The Habitat also partners with leading scientists around the world to conduct research that is critical for the survival of the species. Opportunities at the Habitat are less expensive and safer than field research. All research is non-invasive (e.g. observation only, collection of fecal samples) or voluntary for the bear, who choose whether to participate at every encounter.
The Habitat facilitates research that guides conservation efforts for wild bears and improves the welfare of bears in human care.
