Instead, it is based on the seasons.

Roughly 2000 years ago the constellations in the sky matched with the seasons. During this time the Sun was always entering Aries during the Spring Equinox. However, the stars have slowly changed location relative to Earth's seasons. Today there is a difference of up to two zodiac signs between the mainstream systems and the actual constellations in the sky.
