My name is Jack Douglass, and I’m 22 years old. I’ve been playing piano for 11 years, and I learned almost entirely from YouTube.

I only had about one year of basic piano lessons to start out, but my teachers discouraged me from learning on my own and learning the pieces I was REALLY drawn to, saying that I’ll develop bad habits and struggle to grow as a pianist. The world of piano seemed exciting and adventurous, but these basic workbooks stifled my creativity and turned my piano lessons into a chore. I didn't want anything to do with piano.

That's when I quit my lessons and dedicated myself to learn by watching people's hands. I wouldn't watch the slow verbal tutorials of pieces, because Musical Basics (my inspiration) pieces only had the high-speed videos to learn from.

6 years later, I learned to read music. I attended a few masterclasses, but the bulk of my skill (around 90%) came from teaching myself.
