Types of Ableism

Interpersonal ableism: This involves direct interactions between individuals, where prejudice or discrimination is expressed through words, actions, or attitudes. Examples include microaggressions, such as telling someone "You don’t look disabled," or making assumptions about a person’s abilities based on their disability

Hostile ableism: This involves intentional aggressive behavior toward individuals with disabilities, such as mocking & teasing. It can also include exclusion from social or professional opportunities.

Benevolent ableism: This refers to well-meaning but harmful actions, such as treating individuals with disabilities as "inspirational" or "tragic". One may hold conflicting attitudes toward people with disabilities, such as both pitying & fearing them. Forms of ableism are deeply embedded in society & can be both overt and subtle
