The game is very meta. Having to play the same game again and again is a personal nightmare.

The game seems to imply that some things are in fact real or atleast the usual reality and unreality intersecting of SH. The other endings require you to ignore the pills completely, which means that at the very least Hinako is only experiencing the other effects of the drug, talking to your inner self and reaching the divine.

This game really reminds me of Yukiko's Social Link in Persona 4. She doesn't want to inherit her parent's inn, because it will trap her in her hometown- her shadow self is a princess in a castle waiting for someone to rescue her. Through the social link she develops independent living skills and thinks about becoming a licensed decorator, but after a sleazy TV show insults the inn and she gets pissed at them, she ends up changing her mind and realizing that she does love the inn and just didn't want to feel trapped. Basically exactly what happens with Hinako and her fiancé. Japanese media seems really afraid of outright condemning tradition or custom- I understand it's a conservative culture, but when I see it back away from it in basically the same way twice...
