Savate, the sport
Savate (pronounced sa-vat) was a demonstration sport in the Paris Olympic Games in 1924.

Savate is fundamentally a fighting sport, with two main disciplines french boxing and canne de combat. French boxing concentrates on kicking and punching skills, mobility and defence. It is a shoe-based fighting art, with effective hand strikes and dynamic kicks.

Canne de Combat (or La Canne) is a traditional French stick fighting art consisting of striking techniques, blocks, feints and combinations. It is a long range, graceful art, involving stylish striking and athletic movement. In a controlled light contact stick fighting sport competition, padded clothing, gloves and headguards are worn.

Savate Defence
Savate did not begin as a sport, but as a form of self-defence. In addition to kicks and punches, training in savate defence includes knee, shin and elbow strikes, locks, sweeps, throws and takedowns. It is a reality-based fighting system.
