Did you know that, canonically, Labao is actually from Brazil? It was casually revealed during the Corsair release ball, where one of the devs mentioned that his whole character concept was inspired by coastal Brazilian folklore and port cities. Apparently, early drafts even had him tied to a fictional harbor somewhere between Rio and Salvador, which explains the nautical motifs and his laid-back but sharp personality.
And his name isn’t meant to be read in English at all—it follows Portuguese pronunciation. So instead of “La-bow,” it’s closer to “La-bão,” with that soft nasal ending that doesn’t really exist in English. It actually fits the character way better once you hear it that way!
