Description

Huong Lan is a renowned Vietnamese female singer known for her patriotic and sentimental music. She is considered a persevering voice in the genre of traditional and folk music, as well as in the genre of "cai luong" (a form of modern folk opera).
Her real name is Tran Thi Ngoc Anh, born on May 9th, 1956 in Saigon, and she is the eldest of five children in her family. Her father, Huu Phuoc, was a "cai luong" artist in the Republic of Vietnam during the 1960s. Under her father's guidance, she began her singing career in the "vong co" genre. In 1960, when she was only five years old, her father brought her on stage to perform in the "cai luong" play "Thieu Phu Nam Xuong".
Her stage name, Huong Lan, was created by combining "Huong" from Thanh Huong and "Lan" from Ut Bach Lan, which were the stage names of two close artist friends of her family.
The 1980s were dubbed "the decade of Huong Lan" as she achieved success in both modern and traditional music genres.
